Botox® is short for “botulinum toxin”. Sounds scarier than it is though! Botox® is a purified form of the toxin and only used in very small quantities. It’s a prescription medicine, which is why you don’t see it in adverts. It’s best known for treating facial lines, but is also used for various medical conditions, including excessive perspiration.
The lines that appear when you raise your eyebrows, smile or frown, are caused by underlying muscles contracting and squeezing the skin like a concertina. Botox® stops this by blocking the nerve impulses to the muscles. Lines are temporarily smoothed, while un-injected muscles remain unaffected.
Horizontal forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, laughter lines/crow’s feet around the eyes and fine lines around the mouth from smoking. We prefer not to use Botox® on the lower half of the face, except to treat fine lines around the lips, as it risks the smile and changing the character of the face.
It’s absolutely necessary to have a full consultation to establish what you want. This first appointment, is the most important. During treatment, tiny injections are made with a fine needle into the muscles causing wrinkles. It may prick a little but a cream can be applied to numb the area first.
You are likely to see wrinkles softened in 3-5 days although full effects usually take up to 10 days. The effects usually last 3-6 months but can last for up to 12 months. A course of treatments is therefore often recommended.
Strategic placement of Botox in particular muscles by a qualified, skilled practitioner can achieve a natural look, as the muscles of facial expression won’t be completely ‘frozen’ and you won’t get the ‘wind tunnel’ look!
There may be spot bruising or inflammation around the injection site following treatment although this should go away quite quickly. Side effects are, thankfully, rare as are allergic reactions.
The initial Facial Cosmetics Consultation costs £50 then prices for treatment start from £300 per vile. Be warned that some practitioners charge per area, others per vile, so it’s important to know what you’re paying for before treatment starts. Please refer to our Price List for further details.
