Dental Crowns

What are Dental Crowns?

A Crown (often called a ‘cap’) is a tooth-shaped covering that fits over a badly decayed or broken down tooth or Dental Implant. It can improve the strength and/or appearance of a tooth.

Why have one?

Crowns are the ideal dental restoration for broken teeth or ones weakened by decay or large fillings. The beautiful architecture of a natural tooth can be destroyed by many factors: decay, acid erosion, aggressive tooth-brushing, abrasive toothpastes, trauma. The shape and function will therefore need to be restored, but Cosmetic Fillings have their limitations, often leaving Crowns as the best option.

What does treatment involve?

A thorough examination, including an x-ray, to ensure the root is of sound health and to assess the health of all the supporting structures, especially the gums. You’ll need to make at least 2 visits: the first, for a) preparing/drilling the tooth to the ideal shape for the chosen crown, b) taking dental impressions/matching shade and c) fitting the temporary crown; the second, for fitting the permanent crown. There will usually be 1-2 weeks between appointments.

Which type of Crown do you use?

We use Zirconium, as we believe this is the best Crown currently available – it looks natural and combines the strength of a bonded crown with the appearance of a porcelain crown. The tips of the teeth can look real, with a translucency like natural teeth, thanks to the skill of our Master Ceramicist.

Will it stay in place?

This is one of the questions we’re asked most often. In short, yes. The angles are skilfully cut by our Cosmetic Technician, following the complicated preparations we send to him, which ensures the Crown stays in place.

How long will they last?

It depends on how well you look after them. The generally quoted average is 10 years, but they can last much longer with proper care.

How much do they cost?

£300 to £700 per Crown, depending on type. But don’t forget crowns can last for many years, so don’t always pick the cheapest. Please refer to our Price List for further details.
