Dental Implants – The Best Option For A Missing Tooth
Dental implants are considered to be the next best thing to a real tooth as they mimic function as well as aesthetic by replacing your tooth’s root – something that cannot be achieved with dentures.
Dental implants become a permanent part of you
Dental implants are made from titanium, a metal that is compatible with the human body and for which the rejection rate is very low. When an implant is placed in your jawbone, a process known as osseointegration occurs; in layman’s terms this means the implant fuses with the jawbone to become a permanent part of you over a period of around 6 months. Once this has occurred, we can place a restoration such as a crown over the top. By contrast, as dentures are removable, the jawbone does not receive the stimulation it requires and consequently a process known as resorption occurs.
Resorption (jawbone shrinkage) occurs without implants
Your jawbone receives regular stimulation throughout the day when you chew your food but when you lose a tooth, it no longer receives the same level of stimulation – this is when resorption (jawbone shrinkage) occurs. Your jawbone width can shrink by as much as 25% in the first year after you lose a tooth and this continues by an average of 4mm each subsequent year. As mentioned above, dentures cannot combat the issue of resorption because they are not a fixed solution.
Restore your confidence
As well as leaving an unsightly gap in your smile, the loss of the jawbone via resorption affects your whole facial aesthetic. The lower third of the face gradually becomes smaller each year treatment is neglected, making you appear significantly older than your years and affecting your self-esteem in the long term. The gap in your teeth may also stop you from wanting to smile. Whilst this may not sound like too much of an issue, the long-term effects of repressing serotonin (the chemical associated with wellbeing that is released when you smile) can leave you feeling unhappy.
Here at The Whyte House we can assess your suitability for dental implants at a consultation appointment, where you can discuss your expectations of treatment and pose any questions you might have about the procedure and the benefits. We are very proud to work with Dr Phil Bennet, Exeter’s only European expert in dental implants, who has placed over 5000 implants, so you can be sure you’re in the safest of hands.
We look forward to welcoming you.
