Your teeth are for eating, not for opening packaging, cutting sticky tape or cracking open nuts! Natural teeth, crowns or veneers can easily be chipped or broken. So, reach for the scissors or a knife instead.

Go steady on sweet things

Grazing on sweets and sugary snacks leaves teeth constantly under attack from plaque acid. It’s not so much the amount of sugar, but the total number of sugar hits per day that’s the problem. Go for a more tooth-friendly nibble, like cheese, nuts, bread sticks or crackers … at least some of the time.

Beware of teeth-staining drinks

Dark-coloured or pigmented drinks, like red wine, tea, coffee, cranberry juice and cola, can all stain teeth over time. If they can stain your clothes or carpet, they can stain your teeth! Switching to white wine, colourless drinks or herbal tea, at least occasionally, can help.

Eat crunchy foods

Believe it or not, the abrasiveness of foods like apples, carrots and celery makes them natural ‘teeth cleaners’, meaning they can actually help to remove stains from teeth without harming the enamel. also see the link below.

Did you know that certain lipstick shades can actually make your teeth look whiter? If your teeth are stained or yellowish, go for nude or pink lipsticks with bluish undertones, like raspberry, and avoid dark or orangey shades. If you have greyish teeth, try nude pinks with an almost brownish hue and avoid red lipsticks with blue undertones.

Add some sparkle

Silver-coloured jewellery and clear crystals, like fake or real diamonds, highlight the white accents in your teeth. By contrast, gold-coloured jewellery can often accentuate any yellowish tones. Using bronzer, mineral make-up or a touch of fake tan to give a glow to your skin can also help make your teeth appear whiter.

Brush right

Don’t brush your teeth straight after having sugary or acidic food or drinks, as your mouth takes one hour to reach a neutral pH, which is when it’s safe to brush. Keep a spare toothbrush and toothpaste at work or in your bag or, failing that, keep a travel size (alcohol-free) mouthwash handy.

Sloosh and chew

If you’re out-and-about or can’t clean your teeth, have a glass of water between drinks to rinse your mouth, lessening any staining or acid impact, and chew sugar-free gum after meals to increase saliva, helping neutralise acids in the mouth.
